Nurture Parents aims to open a safe, comfortable, accessible place in Dundee where expectant and new parents can rely on finding non-judgemental, respectful, empathic support. Experiences around pregnancy and birth can affect women and their families for the rest of their lives so our aim is to help them find the support and information they need at the start of their journey to prepare them for the challenges of becoming a parent.
Peer supporters at Nurture Parents will be involved with drop-in sessions, classes and workshops which run mornings and afternoons on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during term time. Volunteers will support staff and sessional staff running these sessions, being involved in setting up the room, tidying up etc and more importantly having time to listen to a parent who may have something on their mind.
Therefore, we need volunteers able to listen as parents share their day-to-day challenges, without offering advice or possible solutions. We need volunteers who understand the value of being with another person who has time to really listen to you. Volunteers will be encouraged to regularly support either one morning or one afternoon session each week during term-time until mid December 2019 and all volunteers will be expected to attend initial three days training, a peer support group every six weeks and occasional training thereafter.
