2018 marked 20 years of continuous voluntary service to the Tayside Council on Alcohol for Peter Rice, and to celebrate he achieved the Trustee/ Board member of the year award at our award ceremony earlier this year. Peter once a Consultant Addictions Psychiatrist for the NHS was a deserving winner for his lengthy contribution and commitment to improving alcohol misuse situations with visibly positive results.
Firstly, his passion for challenging these issues led to him becoming the chair of the organisation in 2008. During this time he was also a member of SHAAP where he became a passionate campaigner for the proposal for Minimum Unit Pricing – which was implemented in 2018! It is Peter’s support which has made a significant contribution to TCA; where he has assisted with three chief officers, overseen trustees come and go, shared his professional skills and knowledge, and supported TCA through policy, practice and financial challenges.
Not only is Peter a committed volunteer through his supportive nature, but his dedication to TCA is also notable. For example, he is the alcohol policy lead for the Royal College of Psychiatrists, a Board Member of the UK Alcohol Alliance and a consultant to WHO Europe, and until 2013 an NHS Consultant – however he assures TCA is a main priority! Finally, Peter is recognised as an approachable and caring individual whose personality reminds TCA of what is important – to improve the lives of those effected by alcohol within Scotland.
