Each month, we will be featuring a different charity or other non-profit organisation that relies on the help of volunteers. In their words, you will hear what these organisations do and the difference volunteers make to them.
Today, we hear from Dundee & Angus ADHD Support Group. Read all about them below. If you would like to volunteer with Dundee & Angus ADHD Support Group, contact the Project Coordinator on 07856 110910 or email sj@adhddasupport.org.
Who do you help and in what way?
We provide services to support and empower children, young people and parents/caregivers suffering and affected from the medical condition Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and through this raise awareness, tolerance and acceptance of the condition.
We are here to support parents/carers through the diagnosis of the condition to provide practical assistance on how to manage the symptoms of the condition daily, and to share information and knowledge.
We run youth groups on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 6-8pm, open to all children ages 5-18 with ADHD. The children thrive when coming along to this as it allows them to be themselves, work on their social skills, and to learn new things that will help them in school and future employment.
In 2017 we opened a charity shop to help provide a space where the young people that use our service could gain valuable experience in working with the general public and as part of a team. It continues to be a busy shop and has now become a valuable part of the community with regular customers popping into chat whilst supporting our organisation.
What difference do volunteers make to your organization?
Volunteers make a huge difference to our organisation. It ensures our staff are more efficient and get the support they require to do their role in the youth groups and in the charity shop. Without volunteers we would not be able to support the amount of families and children that we do.
What volunteers do you need at the moment?
We are always looking for volunteers for our youth groups, charity shop, and fundraisers. However, at the moment we desperately require volunteers for our charity shop.
And what benefits can they expect?
- Volunteering is always rewarding, and our volunteers play a huge part in our organisation succeeding.
- You will gain an understanding of ADHD.
- You will gain experience in the appropriate sector, whether it be for youth work or retail.
- It will improve your self-esteem, build a sense of community, and you will be an invaluable part of our team.
- Alongside this, there will be monthly ongoing support to help with any personal objectives you have, and to ensure you achieve the experience and skills you set out to gain.
- Expenses will also be paid.
- Can visit the shop and our main office beforehand for a taster session or more information and to meet the team.
- Training will be provided
If no-one volunteered, where would you be?
We would be lost without volunteers as they support us so much with everything we do, whether it be the youth groups, fundraising or the charity shop. We are limited with who we can employ so volunteers are our lifeline and we couldn’t run our group without people wanting to help us and the families that we support.
